Different types of nail files

Nail files come in various materials and designs, each offering distinct advantages.

Here are some common types:

Emery Boards: Made of cardboard with a sand paper surface, these offer affordability and convenience. They work well for shaping and smoothing natural nails. These come in different grits from 240 grit to 80 grit for different techniques. Learn more about which grit to choose for which technique here. They are designed for single use. These thinner, unpadded files, are designed for home use where professional types have a foam centre core to cushion the file and give more flexibility and durability. These are usually the most cost effective. 

Metal Files: Metal files, typically made of stainless steel, are durable and long-lasting. They work well for shaping artificial nails, but they may be too harsh for natural nails.

Metal Core File and Peel off Filing Paper: These are typically made of stainless steel with a file paper surface that is designed for one use, to be peeled off and thrown away after each customer. The metal core can then be sanitised and disinfected inbetween use. A hygienic but costly option and the metal core is not as flexible as a standard nail file.

Glass Files: Glass files are made from tempered glass and have a gentle yet effective filing surface. They are suitable for both natural and artificial nails, offering precision and durability. Glass files are also easy to clean and sanitise, making them a hygienic option but are more suited to home use. These can be great retail items for nail technicians to increase their revenue.

Buffing Blocks: Buffing blocks are multi-sided tools that allow for gentle buffing and smoothing of the nail surface. They typically have different grits on each side, ranging from coarse to fine. Buffing blocks are great for achieving a polished, shiny finish.
